What will my first appointment consist of?
If this is your first appointment at the office I will have you complete a brief intake form (usually takes 5 minutes) with your health history and goals for your massage appointment. Plan on arriving at all appointments 5 minutes before your scheduled time to insure you receive your full session. Any late arrivals may only receive the remaining time left in a session.
Where Will My Massage Session Take Place?
Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. A table warmer can be used to increase your comfort level.
Must I Be Completely Undressed?
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with you unclothed while still leaving your underwear on; however, you may decide what amount of clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort. You will be properly draped during the session with a sheet and towel or blanket.
How Long Will The Session Last?
The average full-body massage session lasts one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, for instance the upper body (back, shoulders & neck) or lower body (hips, legs and feet). Many people prefer a 60 or 90-minute session for optimal benefit. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session.
What Should I Do During The Massage ?
Make yourself comfortable. I will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Others like to talk during their session. Feel free to ask the me questions about massage in general or about the particular technique you are receiving. Also you can always let me know if I need to adjust the pressure at anytime. Most therapeutic massages will involve more moderate to deep work but it should never be unbearable.
How Will I Feel After The Massage?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity, which can last for days. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water afterward. Its not uncommon to have muscle soreness afterward similar to after working out. That soreness will decrease within a day or two.
What Are The Benefits Of Massage And Bodywork?
Consistent massage can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety, and create an overall sense of well-being. Think of your first appointment as just the beginning to your overall health and wellness program!
